It is recognised that eliminating hazards and risks through design is the most effective and durable way to create a healthy and safe work environment.
Repeated studies of Australian workplace injury statistics have led to ‘healthy and safe by design’ being one of the seven action areas in the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-22.
Work, Health and Safety (WHS) legislation requires engineers and designers to consider the hazards presented throughout the entire life of an asset to ensure ‘so far as is reasonably practicable’ that it is safe to build, install, test, commission, operate, maintain and demolish.
This workshop focuses on the practical implementation and delivery of Safety in Design activities and deliverables throughout the end-to-end engineering and design process.
You will learn about tools, practices and techniques that give rise to safer design outcomes, and hence help you comply with duties and obligations under WHS Legislation and the equivalent legislation in WA and Victoria.
During the workshop, you will use a case study to practice implementing Safety in Design, and reinforce your understanding of how it contributes to minimising the likelihood of workplace incidents, injuries and fatalities.

This course will be facilitated by Mike Hurd, Daniel Milne or Trevor Zwar from Engineering. Systems. Management.
Mike Hurd has 25 years' experience working with high-integrity systems such as nuclear plants, submarines, rail signalling and control, and electricity transmission and distribution networks.
Mike has developed safety in design processes, templates and training to augment the systems and processes already in use by engineering organisations. He has extensive experience of safety in design applications, its meaning, practical implications, the tools that give rise to safe outcomes and the issues that have ‘grown around’ the model WHS Legislation.
In 2013 Mike instigated an Engineered Safety committee in Engineers Australia's South Australia Division, bringing together a group of safety professionals with the common goal to promote safety in the engineering life cycle.
Daniel Milne holds a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Honours, from the University of Adelaide.
Currently working for E.S.M. as a Control Systems Engineer, Daniel has expertise in engineering management, control systems engineering and engineered safety (safety in design).
Daniel has specialist experience in the defence sector and oil and gas industry, working both on and offshore in domestic and international markets. Through positions held, Daniel values and promotes a culture of safe practice and quality.
Trevor Zwar is a Senior Systems Engineer at Engineering. Systems. Management. where he specialises in engineering management and systems engineering, with a focus on safety and designer WHS duties. With over 10 years’ professional engineering experience, Trevor has worked across the engineering lifecycle in multiple industries, and has practiced in the electrical, mechanical and control systems disciplines. He has worked with research institutions to develop new technologies, and has presented his work at national conferences.
Trevor holds bachelor degrees in mechatronic engineering (hons) and economics, and is a chartered professional engineer with a passion for safety in engineering. He has experience with functional safety of machinery, and is a member of the Engineers Australia SA Division Engineered Safety Group.
This course will be delivered with a series of practical case studies and exercises specific to the engineering environment.
