Rapid shifts in economic activity, urbanisation, availability of information, resource scarcity and human connectivity have made transport projects increasingly complex. As this complexity increases, we can no longer rely on traditional methods to deliver transport projects.

Systems Engineering is a disciplined approach to ensuring that projects deliver real stakeholder value in today's uncertain and complex environments.

Key to the Systems Engineering approach is a strong upfront focus on understanding the problem. It prioritises engaging with the broader, dynamic context of projects, mapping how a built system will interact with that context, and identifying the competing needs of stakeholders.

This one-day training course will equip participants with a basic understanding of Systems Engineering principles, tools to identify the project context, and techniques for analysing, writing and structuring requirements that meet stakeholder needs.

Pre-course requirement

Prior to attending this course, participants are required to complete an online component. This will consist of 8 - 12 hours of online activities to introduce participants to the theories and concepts covered during the face-to-face component and must be completed two business days before the course.

To ensure participants attending a public session or an in-house session are prepared for the course, they cannot be substituted two working days beforehand.

John Nasr MIEAust CPEng NER, MsC is a Chartered Systems Engineering specialist with experience in both government and commercial positions spanning the automotive, aerospace, Defence and transport sectors. A recognised leader in his field, John is dedicated to using his Systems Thinking, Systems Engineering, process improvement and project management expertise to help clients navigate and manage the early stages of complex projects in order to reduce risk and ensure that the ‘customer' receives what they ‘need’ once the system is operational.

John has led the client-side development effort for complex, multi-billion dollar Defence projects, large multi-disciplinary teams across several sectors, and has developed cost-cutting asset management strategies. In transport, John has been instrumental in challenging the way complex projects are developed in Victoria and has developed and embedded across the portfolio a systems engineering methodology tailored to the needs of the Victorian transport sector that has started to deliver significant benefits to the state.
