This online course is delivered by Global Sustainable Energy Solutions, an Australian leader in renewable energy engineering, training and consultancy specialising in photovoltaic technology.

By utilising solar energy, individuals and businesses can become less reliant on ‘the grid’. However, a connection to the electricity network is often beneficial or even required.

The course teaches the theory necessary to design a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system with battery storage that meets the requirements of the electricity network area.

The course is eligible for 60 Clean Energy Council (CEC) Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points. It has been prepared and mapped against unit UEERA5001 (Design Battery Storage Systems for Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems).

Upon successful completion of the unit, applicants can apply for an endorsement towards their existing CEC Accreditation (ie. Design of Grid-Connected PV Systems).

This course forms part of an accreditation credential from the Clean Energy Council (CEC) for designing and installing grid connected PV systems with battery storage.

To attend this course, participants must have successfully completed the Grid Connected PV Systems - Design online training course or similar (i.e. units UEENEEK125A and UEENEEK135A).

Applicants must also supply their CEC accreditation number to enrol.

Is this course for you?

This course is for anyone who has completed the Grid Connected PV Systems - Design online training course. It assumes knowledge gained through this course or similarly based units UEENEEK125A and UEENEK135A.

If you’re part of an engineering team involved in the design of grid-connected power supply systems with battery storage, this course is for you.

It will be particularly useful for electrical engineers, electronics engineers or any other engineer who has completed electrical-based studies.

Engineers holding accreditation through the Clean Energy Council requiring CPD points will also find the course beneficial.

Your facilitator for this course

Global Sustainable Energy Solutions (GSES) is an Australian based renewable energy engineering, consultancy and training organisation, undertaking projects in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands.

Established in 1998, GSES has a diverse portfolio, and is experienced in system engineering, design, audit and education for both government and private enterprise. Their expertise covers both on grid and off grid renewable energy resources and commercial aspects of RE technology systems and power supplies.

Full Course Outline

The course is delivered online and takes approximately 40 hours to complete. After registering online, access will be provided to the online teaching material. Participants can complete the course at their own pace and will be granted access into the course for a total of 12 months upon enrolment.

Tutors are available for additional help either by phone, email or in person.

This course will cover the following topics:

  • System configurations
  • Battery characteristics and technologies
  • Sizing the PV array
  • Sizing the batteries
  • Sizing the solar controllers
  • Selecting the inverters
  • System efficiencies and yield
  • System wiring and protection
  • Proper system installation layouts and requirements

Participants are responsible for obtaining current copies of the following Australian Standards, available for purchase from the SAI Global website or Techstreet website, and also available from some libraries, institutions and industry associations.

  • AS/NZS 5033 – Photovoltaic arrays
  • AS/NZS 4777.1 – Grid connection of energy systems via inverters
  • AS/NZS 3000 – Wiring rules
  • AS/NZS 3008.1.1 – Selection of cables Part 1.1
  • AS/NZS 5139 – Electrical installations – Safety of battery systems for use with power conversion equipment

Participants will also be supplied with the publication: Battery Storage Systems for Grid-Connected PV Systems 2nd Edition after enrolment at no additional cost.
