Monte Carlo Design Flood Estimation Using RORB

Engineering context

The Australian Rainfall and Runoff 2019 guidelines have been updated to account for the significant technological advances in flood estimation, as well as a suite of new data sets and software. ARR recommends the application of Ensemble and Monte Carlo techniques for design flood estimation.

This workshop provides practising flood hydrologists with the knowledge and tools to apply Ensemble and Monte Carlo techniques for design flood estimation with RORB software.

RORB is one of the most widely used flood estimation software packages in Australia, and is the conceptual forebear to a range of other models.  It is a generalised, event-based rainfall-runoff model typically used to estimate flood hydrographs from rainfall.

During this course, industry experts will guide you through how to build and run a RORB model for historic flood events and to estimate design floods that are consistent with ARR 2019 approaches and datasets. You will also learn a range of techniques to estimate design floods in catchments with limited gauged streamflow data.

Day One – RORB fundamentals

Designed as an introduction for new users or those who need a refresher on the basics, this day is focused on the fundamentals of RORB modelling.

Day Two – Design flood estimation in practice

Suitable for those with some experience using RORB (or those who have attended Day One), this course focuses on design flood estimation, changes to ARR and using the Monte Carlo joint probability technique.

Your facilitator for this course

Associate Professor Dr Rory Nathan FIEAust CPEng NER

Dr Nathan has over 35 years’ experience in engineering and environmental hydrology.

He has made a substantial contribution to industry best practice in a range of engineering and environmental fields, particularly in the use of stochastic methods of flood estimation, the characterisation of hydrologic risk, regional estimation techniques in catchment hydrology, and the assessment of sustainable limits on water resources.

He is a co-editor and contributing author of the Australian Rainfall and Runoff guidelines, and for many years he was Australia’s representative on the International Committee of Large Dams floods committee and a member of the hydrology sub-committee of the NSW Dams Safety Committee.

David Stephens MIEAust CPEng NER

David is an associate of HARC and has over 15 years’ experience in design flood hydrology, hydraulic modelling and floodplain management.  David has worked on a range of flood studies for local and state government and private sector clients across Australia, many in a technical review, project manager or project director role. 

He has been involved in the ongoing development of RORB for over a decade, and led the implementation of a range of features including the graphical catchment file editor and a number of the significant enhancements required to keep RORB consistent with the new techniques and datasets made available by Australian Rainfall and Runoff 2019. He continues to play an active and ongoing role in the development of RORB.
