Design and Installation of Buried Pipes

Engineering context

This course is run exclusively by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the internationally recognised leader in training for engineers and technical professionals.

Designers often think of design and installation of buried pipe as two separate processes. This two-day course reinforces the fact that, because of the fundamental importance of good soil support in pipe performance, the two processes cannot be separated.

As a participant in the course you’ll discover how simultaneous consideration of pipe and soil, as two parts of one pipe-soil system, can optimise pipe performance and longevity, prevent failures and minimise the high cost of downtime and repairs.

The course covers the latest changes in pipe specifications, the importance of soil density and soil stiffness, ACSE Standard 15-93 for design and manufacture of reinforced concrete pipe and other ASCE standards for reinforced concrete pipe and box sections, as well as much more.

All participants will receive a copy of Pipeline Installation 2.0

Is this course for you?

This course has been designed for anyone involved in pipe design and construction and would be particularly useful for design engineers, project managers, construction foremen, public works engineers, construction managers, soil testing personnel, pipeline owners, specification writers and construction inspectors.

Your facilitator for this course

Amster K. Howard, Jr., M.ASCE is an international pipeline installation expert and instructor on soil classification, earthwork construction control, and pipe installation.

He spent over 30 years conducting research on buried pipe and troubleshooting for pipe installation projects for the Bureau of Reclamation. At the Bureau, he participated in preparing specifications, writing installation manuals for pipe ranging in diameter from 2 inches to 25 feet, and training inspectors.

Mr Howard is now a consulting civil engineer in Lakewood, Colorado.

Jesse Beaver, P.E. M.ASCE is a national consultant on the structural performance of buried pipe and other buried structures. He is a veteran of the United States Army with past experience with a City Department of Public Utilities and a State Department of Transportation.

He holds a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is a registered Professional Engineer in two states.

Mr Beaver is now a consulting engineer with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. in Waltham, Massachusetts.
